When: September 5 - 7, 2019
Where: Crystal Inn, 818 E Winchester St. Murray, UT 84107

Class Descriptions:

Creative Studio 7 Schedule:

Thursday class 1
Quilter, quilter, what do you see?
(Design – 3 hours – Lecture) Many times, we stare at a quilt and wonder what to do. In this class, TJ will explain the way she sees a number of different types of quilts and the way she approaches quilting from a designer’s perspective. In addition, she will show you how she manipulates a design to fit a space. You will walk away with a new perspective and maybe a few new ideas. Please feel free to bring quilts that might be baffling you.

Thursday class 2
Draw Pattern – Point 2 Point (P2P) & Playtime
(Statler – 3 hours – Lecture/Demo) Learn about using P2P patterns. Draw pattern is the button on the tool bar, but that’s just the beginning. Learn the tricks that TJ uses to increase your design stash, the flexibility to adjust as you go and the FUN that you can have using Draw Pattern and different P2P patterns. TJ will share what makes a pattern a good P2P, how to create them, and how to use them.

Friday class 1
Do you want to design?
(Statler – 3 hours – Demo/Hands-on) In the first part of this 3-hour class, TJ will demonstrate techniques using the drawing tools (and her 12 years as a designer) in Creative Studio Stand Alone Mode. In the second part, you will use the tools yourself on a laptop with CS7.1 installed and before the class is over, you will have drawn your own design. Scan (or photograph) and send a simple hand-drawn (by you) design to TJ at store@stitchhappy.com prior to August 30th in preparation for this class.

Friday class 2
Blue lines be gone!
(Statler – 3 hours -- Lecture/Demo) The age of the pre-marked blue line that never goes away is over. Since CS7 allows us to see what we are quilting, we can layout an entire quilt in SAM and then quilt it. TJ will offer hints and tips about how to approach the quilting. Basting, batting, and blocks will be discussed as well as fills and fullness.

Hand-Guided Schedule: (For all skill levels)

Please bring your favorite ruler for stitching straight lines, your favorite small ruler for stitching curved lines

Fill it with Style! (3 hours)
In this class you will learn over 20 background fill designs that create amazing texture and add visual interest to your quilting. You will also discover how much fun it is to combine freeform ruler work and free motion quilting together. We will cover pebble quilting, and some of the fun ways you can change it up, to make it your own. In addition to the actual designs, Jodi will share with you some very simple design ideas, such as adding in small areas of interest, using contrasting thread, and implied frames and borders that will take your background fill designs to a new level.

Modern Simplicity (3 hours)
Are you having difficulty trying to decide exactly what designs to use when quilting modern quilts? Whether you are making your own modern quilts, or have been receiving them from your customers, Jodi will show you some amazingly SIMPLE free-hand designs that are very adaptable, and effective, in achieving texture and movement in the often irregular shaped piecing, and large areas of negative space found in many modern quilts. You will learn the basic designs, and then, how you can add to them to create more complex variations, depending on the look you want to achieve. These designs are not just for modern quilts, many can also be used on fun kids quilts, as well as quilts needing a more masculine design. You are going to be amazed by the adaptability of these very SIMPLE designs.

Stencil Magic (3 hours)
Learn how to use basic stencils to create extraordinary new designs that have an updated, more contemporary/modern feel. You will learn how to use stencils as a backbone to create new designs. Jodi will show you how to create multiple designs from a single stencil; for backgrounds, blocks, and borders. You will also learn how to use the full stencils, as well as how you can utilize only pieces and parts of them. We will also discuss marking methods. You will go home and look at your stencils in a whole new way!

Less Stress Feathers (3 hours)
Less Stress Feathers will allow you to stitch formal style feathers without the STRESS of backtracking. If you love the look of formal feathers, but have been struggling with the backtracking required to stitch them, or would like to stitch them in a contrasting thread color? Then these feathers are just what you are looking for. Elegant AND easy—what more could you ask for! We will also learn the many ways you can add more stitching to these feathers depending on the density of quilting you desire. We will begin class by stitching both longarm, and traditional formal feathers, before learning the Less Stress Feathers, so that you can experience the difference in the stitching paths.
